My mentee is really trying very hard to score extremely on the SOL with her students. I admire her constant use of DI. She has a tough group of 9th grade students. Everyday (it seems like) she comes up with 3-4 activities and breaks her students into groups and her groups work on activities based on ability. Today for her SOL she has some students working on computers, some are doing some review worksheets, and some are making a large poster. If you were to walk by her room the controlled caos may have you thinking that nothing productive is going on, but I am in the next room and her students are loving it.
Anyone else out these use DI? aka differenetiated instruction?
I have in the past. Right now I'm using station reviews (6 - 7 stations a day) and the kids go around and review the material. The stations can involve rock id, drawings, creation of foldables, diagrams, vocab matching, etc. I'm a huge fan of controlled chaos so more power to your mentee. =)
ReplyDeleteI am with Gneiss teacher, I have used stations in the past. Students rotate through each stations. Some stations would require students to work in groups, some they work on the computer and there are some stations where they work alone. This does seem to help students.
ReplyDeleteTalking of computers you should check out www.JASON.org and Tectonic Fury. The online games are great. They have an awesome mineral/rock id game and landscapes games. The kids love doing them and are learning as they go. and best of all the registration is free.
